Tirzepatide safety & eligibility
Tirzepatide is prescription-only. Here's a plain-English overview of side effects, contraindications, and who decides whether it's appropriate for you. This is education, not medical advice.
Common side effects
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort — usually mild-to-moderate and most pronounced during dose escalation. Slower titration and dietary adjustments can help; talk to your prescriber about persistent symptoms.
Serious risks & contraindications
Tirzepatide carries a boxed warning regarding thyroid C-cell tumors observed in rodents. It is contraindicated in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Other considerations include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, severe gastrointestinal disease, and pregnancy/breastfeeding. Disclose your full history to your prescriber.
Who decides eligibility
Only a licensed clinician can determine whether tirzepatide is appropriate for you, and eligibility is never guaranteed. Compounded tirzepatide is not FDA-approved; brand-name Zepbound (weight) and Mounjaro (type 2 diabetes) are FDA-approved.
